FAQs
1. Who might benefit from Holotropic Breathwork?
Holotropic Breathwork might be of interest to you if:
- you are seeking a more experiential approach to healing, one that goes beyond talk therapy
- you are experiencing a major life crisis and are looking for deep wisdom and insight
- you want to release unresolved issues from the past
- you want to understand the emotional roots of a persistent physical or psychosomatic condition
- you are yearning for deeper insight into the nature of reality and your spiritual path
- you want to integrate a challenging psychedelic experience
- you are searching for an authentic creative impulse or artistic inspiration
- you feel like you’ve been living life without true depth or meaning
2. Can I practice Holotropic Breathwork at home?
Holotropic Breathwork is not something that can be done alone. It’s a carefully
structured process that brings together essential elements: a trained facilitation team, the support of a sitter, a safe and contained space, and time for sharing and
integration.
These components work together to create the depth, safety, and transformation the method is known for. While solo breathwork practices do exist, Holotropic
Breathwork – as developed by Stan and Christina Grof – is designed specifically for a supported group setting.
If you’re interested in starting gently at home, we’re happy to recommend safe
introductory breath practices or help you find a workshop near you.
3. Do I need to join a group, or can I experience Holotropic Breathwork individually?
Holotropic Breathwork is designed to unfold in a group setting and for good reason.
While individual sessions are possible in rare cases, we do not offer them.
We understand that joining a group can feel vulnerable at first, especially before your
first session. But many people who feel hesitant are often surprised by how safe,
supported, and enriching the group experience turns out to be.
In a group, you not only breathe, but you also support others as a sitter, which
deepens the process in meaningful ways. The shared field, the sharing circle, and the
possibility for connection are all powerful aspects of the journey. Being seen, heard, and sharing your experience in a respectful and held space can itself be profoundly healing.
4. Is Holotropic Breathwork just another breathing technique?
It’s a common misconception, but no – Holotropic Breathwork is not simply a
breathing technique. It is a comprehensive method developed by Stanislav and
Christina Grof, combining specific elements such as breath, evocative music,
bodywork, and integration in a carefully held setting.
While we deeply respect many other breath-based modalities, Holotropic Breathwork
is not directly comparable. What makes it unique is the framework of the inner healing intelligence, the supportive structure of the breather–sitter dynamic, and the presence of experienced, specially trained facilitators who create and maintain a safe and respectful space for deep inner work.
It’s more than a technique—it’s a process of self-discovery, transformation, and
connection to something greater.
5. Is Holotropic Breathwork safe if I have a medical condition?
Holotropic Breathwork can be a powerful and transformative experience, and for that
reason, it’s not suitable for everyone.
Because the process can involve intense emotional and physical release, we take
health considerations seriously. Certain medical or psychiatric conditions such as
cardiovascular issues, epilepsy, glaucoma, recent surgeries, or severe mental health
diagnoses – may mean that Holotropic Breathwork is not recommended.
Before registering, we ask all participants to complete a confidential medical form so
we can ensure the setting is safe for everyone involved. If you’re unsure whether it’s
suitable for you, we encourage you to reach out to us directly or speak with a trusted
healthcare provider.
Your safety and wellbeing come first and we’re happy to help you find the right
support for where you are on your journey.
6. What kind of training do your facilitators have?
All our facilitators are certified through Grof Transpersonal Training (GTT), the official
training developed by Stanislav and Christina Grof. This comprehensive program
includes several years of intensive study and personal process work. The training
covers working with expanded states of consciousness, creating a safe and supportive space, bodywork, integration, and trauma sensitivity. Equally important as
the formal training is our ongoing inner work. Every facilitator on our team has gone
through deep personal experiences and we continue this work ourselves, knowing
that the path of inner exploration is lifelong.
7. How should I prepare for a Holotropic Breathwork session?
Come as you are. There’s no need for previous experience or special preparation –
we’ll guide you through everything with care.
Before each workshop, we offer a short one-on-one video preparation talk to connect
with you personally, answer your questions, and make sure you feel safe and
supported.
It can also be helpful to take some quiet time the evening before, reflect gently on
your intention (without pressure) and avoid alcohol or other strong stimulation. Wear
comfortable clothing and bring an open heart.
8. What does integration look like after a Holotropic Breathwork session?
Integration is a vital part of the Holotropic process. After each session, we offer time
for sharing in a supportive group circle, where participants can speak about their
experiences – or simply listen.
We also encourage creative expression like drawing mandalas, journaling, or
movement as a way to begin making sense of what emerged.
The process of integration continues in the days and weeks after the session. That’s
why we provide suggestions and resources to help you stay connected to what
unfolded. Sometimes insights come right away; other times they emerge slowly and
quietly over time.
We’re here to support you beyond the session – this is not a one-time event, but part
of a deeper unfolding.
9. What might I experience during a Holotropic Breathwork session?
Every session is unique, and each person’s experience can be very different. You
might feel physical sensations like tingling or warmth, emotions ranging from joy,
anger to sadness, vivid memories, images, or deep states of relaxation.
Sometimes the experience feels energetic and dynamic; other times it’s calm and
introspective. There’s no “right” or “wrong” way to experience Holotropic Breathwork –
your inner wisdom guides you through whatever arises. Our trained facilitators are there to support you throughout, holding a safe and
compassionate space for your journey.
10. Is Holotropic Breathwork connected to any religion or belief system?
Holotropic Breathwork is not connected to any religion or religious beliefs. It is open
to everyone, regardless of their faith or spirituality.
The method is deeply inclusive—it welcomes people of all backgrounds, beliefs, and
identities without exclusion. Everyone is accepted and respected.
Holotropic Breathwork provides a safe space for personal exploration and healing,
allowing each participant to connect with their own inner wisdom and meaning—
whether that is spiritual, therapeutic, creative, or simply curious.
