A deeper understanding of human consciousness

Grof’s Cartography of the Psyche

Introduction

Holotropic Breathwork is grounded in the pioneering work of Dr. Stanislav Grof, a psychiatrist and consciousness researcher who spent decades exploring non- ordinary states of consciousness. One of his most important contributions is the expanded cartography of the human psyche, a map that goes far beyond conventional psychological models. This cartography offers a powerful lens through which to understand the full range of experiences that can emerge during Holotropic Breathwork.

The Three Levels of the Psyche

According to Grof’s research, the psyche is not limited to personal biography. It includes three interconnected layers:

1. Biographical Level

This includes memories, emotions, and patterns from your personal life history —
especially those shaped in early childhood. Healing on this level may involve
emotional catharsis, insight into past wounds, or the release of limiting beliefs.

2. Perinatal Level

Rooted in the birth process itself, the perinatal layer includes physical, emotional, and
symbolic experiences connected to our entry into the world. Grof identified four
distinct stages known as the Basic Perinatal Matrices (BPM I–IV), which can show up
in deeply embodied and symbolic ways. Working through this material can lead to
profound liberation and renewal.

3. Transpersonal Level

This realm extends beyond your individual identity. Here, people may experience
archetypal symbols, past-life impressions, ancestral memories, or a sense of merging
with nature, the cosmos, or the divine. These states can be profoundly meaningful, often connected to spiritual awakening, deep compassion, or insight into the
interconnectedness of all life.

Why This Map Matters

This cartography helps us trust the process. When unusual, intense, or even blissful experiences arise during breathwork, Grof’s model provides a framework of meaning – not a diagnosis. It reminds us that:
  • Healing doesn’t always follow a linear path
  • Experiences may not make “sense” at first, but carry deep symbolic value
  • Each person’s journey is unique, and deserves to be met with openness and respect
All our facilitators are trained to hold space across these dimensions of the psyche – whether what arises is emotional, physical, symbolic, or transcendent.

More Than a Theory

Grof’s cartography is not a fixed doctrine. It is a living, evolving orientation rooted in decades of experiential practice. It’s meant to support deep trust in the intelligence of the psyche, and guide facilitators in responding with presence and compassion.
